Travel Costs
Travel costs are calculated using a modification of the Modified Monash Model (MMM), as used by the NDIS, to determine regional, remote and very remote areas using a scaled based on population size and category.
Metropolitan (MMM1) areas are classified as Major Cities of Australia in the Australian Bureau of Statistics Australian Statistical Geography Standard – Remoteness Areas (ASGS-RA) framework.
Regional Centres (MMM2-3) areas are classified as Inner Regional Australia or Outer Regional Australia in the ASGS-RA that are in or within 20km road distance of a town with a population of >50,000 (MM-2) or areas that are not in MM2 and are in, or within 15km road distance of a town with a population between 15,000-50,000.
Regional Areas (MMM4-5) are classified Inner Regional or Outer Regional Australia that are not in MM2-3 areas. MM4 areas are those that are in, or within 10km road distance of a town with a population between 5,000-15,000. MM5 areas are all other areas in Inner Regional or Outer Regional Australia that have a population of less than 1,000, excluding islands.
Remote (MMM6) areas are classified as areas on a populated island that is separated from the mainland and is more than 5km offshore and areas that are islands that have a population of less than 1,000.
Very Remote (MMM7) areas are populated islands that are more than 5km offshore from the mainland.
Travel is calculated on total travel times in minutes (not kilometres) from the centre location.
The maximum amount of travel time Sunshine and Buttercup Therapy Services can claim for the time spent travelling to each participant is 30 minutes in MMM1-3 areas and 60 minutes in MMM4-5 areas. In addition to the above travel, Sunshine and Buttercup Therapy Services are permitted to claim for the time spent travelling from the last participant to the centre location.
The maximum amount of travel time spent on return travel is limited to 30 minutes in MMM1-3 areas and 60 minutes in MMM4- 5 areas. The relevant MMM classification is the area where the participant is when the support is delivered. Travel is claimed at the rate of the therapist providing the service.
